“A compilation of tracks recorded by Hawkwind between 1977-1982, Acid Daze, Vol. 1 does a solid, if unexceptional, job of summarizing a difficult period for the band. In marked contrast to Hawkwind’s early-’70s peak, the late ’70s and early ’80s saw Hawkwind flounder and flail, often struggling to find an identity as psychedelia was rendered obsolete and their brand of brutal space rock was superseded by the twin assaults of punk and heavy metal. The result was a series of often-confused albums, mixing metallic fury with punk velocity but often resulting in a bland, only occasionally riveting sound that signified Hawkwind as little more than another loud, noisy hard rock band. Acid Daze compiles the more unusual songs from this period, such as the more psychedelic “British Tribal Music” and “Ghost Dance,” both of which were never released on official albums, and only including a handful of the more hard rock material like “Spirit of the Age.” Nonetheless, this is still not an entirely satisfying compilation. For one thing, most of the selections are from live recordings, which are often inferior to the studio versions (which also allows the inclusion of ringers like “Urban Guerrilla” and “Masters of the Universe,” both written in the early ’70s but included here in pointless live versions from 1979). For another, it’s far too short, omitting many of the key Hawkwind songs from this period such as “Hassan I Sahba.” Still, considering it does contain some rare tracks, Acid Daze, Vol. 1 is a serviceable collection. ” Victor W.
