After a three-year break, Brett W. Naucke returns with Ground Fault Matinee — a two-EP suite that bridges two distinct sonic worlds yet connects through a shared charged portrait of electronic experimentation
Side A, Universal Voltage, is a whirlwind of electricity born from vintage analog synthesizer systems by legendary designers like Buchla, Serge, and EMS. Here, Naucke trades the melodic familiarity of his earlier work for short, kinetic bursts of swirling sound — wearing influences like Conrad Schnitzler and Morton Subotnik on his sleeve.
Side B, FM for FM, originated as a commission for Black Mountain College Museum’s 2023 Radio Arts program and evolved into a fully realized collection built entirely on FM synthesis. The result probes both the boundaries and clichés of the notoriously complex medium — glassy, alien, and like wielding a soldering iron inside a Yamaha DX7.
Together, Ground Fault Matinee plays like a dual-channel broadcast — a two-for-one onslaught of contrasting frequencies, perfectly out of phase yet undeniably connected and electrically alive.
