“A cult classic album from the ’80s Italian avant-garde music scene, Scorie by Tiziano Popoli and Marco Dalpane is a surprisingly accessible work weaving new age pop sensibilities with the complex rhythm work of minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Composed entirely with synthesizers, the music was originally intended for the stage and developed in collaboration with the Koiné Theater Company. While the avant-garde approach is clearly there, Popoli and Dalpane inject a sort of pop simplicity into the melodies that gives the compositions their uniquely challenging yet inviting quality. “Pop music is something that––somehow––made its way into my music, even the [music] I write today,” explains Popoli. “What attracts me about this ‘genre,’ or rather, ‘attitude’ is probably the simplicity of its formal structure.””
