Terumasa Hino – Journey To Air (2020 Japanese Remaster)

$29.00

My staff pick last month was Masayuki Takayanagi’s New Direction Unit’s Axis/Another Revolvable Thing Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 and this month I’m continuing with another wild Japanese free jazz classic, this time Group Everything Everything Everything with Hino’s “Journey To Air” from 1970.  This record, later credited to its leader, trumpeter Terumasa Hino,  features a 12-piece group consisting of not only Japanese players Terumasa Hino, Motohiko Hino, and Teruo Nakamura, but also a number of American players, as it was reordered in New York City, most notably Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman, and Bob Moses, as well as one notable Englishman, Dave Holland.  Featuring two side long pieces, “Journey To Air 1” and “Journey To Air 2” this one will certainly scratch that itch if you’re a fan of large group free jazz units like Globe Unity Orchestra or Jazz Composer’s Orchestra.

“Reissued for the first time. Rare and rich contents from 1970s Japanese jazz which is now gathering global attention, originally released on Terumasa Hino‘s private label Love Records and distributed by a Japanese major label. Representing “Ode To Workman” from J Jazz : Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 released on BBE, in his session with local NY musicians, Journey To Air along with three other reissues are so important pieces in 1970s independent jazz. In 1970, after breaking up his legendary quintet band, Terumasa Hino moved his base to US. Journey To Air record shows his great effort in his long-term session with the local musicians, and is very important to know Jazz scene in New York at that time. With Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, and Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino produced avant-garde and creative sound that is one and only in the world. Original released in 1970 from Love Records. Remastered; Original artwork; gatefold sleeve.”
