Based in Columbus, Jen Powers and Matthew Rolin have been collaborating since 2018, since releasing two LPs, their self-titled in 2020 and Strange Fortune earlier this year. With Powers on hammered dulcimer and Rolin on acoustic twelve-string guitar, the duo create a mesmerizing, lush sound, subtly shifting and intertwining textures that are equal parts gripping and soothing. Their self-titled LP was released on Feeding Tube Records, and their most recent release moved to Astral Editions, the sister label of experimental, improv, and jazz label Astral Spirits. Previous to their LPs, Powers / Rolin Duo also put out three cassettes, two of which were on Sonnedecker Records and Trouble In Mind. Come to Torn Light on November 27th to let the sound of Powers / Rolin Duo live wash over you, an experience you won’t want to miss.
If you’re familiar with the state of Louisville music in the past decade, you are probably familiar with certain orbiting components of Equipment Pointed Ankh, whether it be Jim Marlowe, Ryan Davis, and Dan Davis’s Tropical Trash (LP On Load), or Chris Bush’s Flanger Magazine or Flower Man (was also in Kentucky’s premeire synth combo Caboladies), or Shutaro Noguchi’s solo LP on Feeding Tube, or Ryan Davis’s amazing music festival / gathering Cropped Out, or his label Sophomore Lounge. All of these components make for one weird band, kinda like if the whole Crazy Doberman crew were way more into Black Dice? Check out their new LP on Astral Editions / Sophomore Lounge!
