Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit – Axis/Another Revolvable Thing 2 (2020 Blank Forms Reissue)

Out of stock

$27.50

Blank Forms is really doing “God’s work” here, first unleashing their stellar reissue of Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit’s April Is the Cruelest Month for the first time on wax, and now releasing Axis/Another Revolable Thing 1 and Axis/Another Revolable Thing 2, on wax for the first time since its initial release.  Both of these records feature a live performance from September 5th, 1975, just months after “April Is the Cruelest Month” was recorded, at the Yasuda Seimei Hall in Tokyo.  Featuring the core group of Masayuki Takayanagi, Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and cello, Kenji Mori on reeds, and Hiroshi Yamazaki on percussion; these LP’s include some of New Direction Unit’s most varied work.  Side A on Axis/Another Revolable Thing 1 sees Takayangi in his most Derek Bailey-esque form stabbing away at his guitar as drummer Hiroshi Yamazaki leads the group even taking a full-on solo throughout “Fragment III.”  Side B’s “Fragment VI” sees New Direction Unit in their heaviest form with Takayangi laying down the feedback and wah throughout.  Axis/Another Revolable Thing 2 sees the group in slower form with Takayanagi’s slow wah swells hovering over Ino’s cello drones, with Yamazaki heavier on metal percussion this round and Mori ditching the sax and picking up a flute for more than half the record.  Axis/Another Revolable Thing 2 not only fills out the gaps left over from the live set layed out on Axis/Another Revolable Thing 1, but stands out as a standalone record that give you sounds that weren’t already explored on the prior release.  So, grab both of these records ASAP!  Keep the Takayanagi reissues coming! – Jon
